Simple Present Active and Passive, If-clauses Type One Combined Exercise

This exercise deals with the Simple Present. Since that would be a bit boring or too easy for more advanced students, we will refer to the Simple Present Passive and the if-clauses Type One  as well.


Simple Present Active

Jonathan plays tennis.
The boys play squash.
Jonathan doesn't play chess.
The boys don't play badminton.
Does Jonathan play volleyball?

The Simple Present refers to:

1. everything that happens on a regular basis, e.g. daily or weekly
2. everything that happens on schedule, e.g. lessons at school, train departures and arrivals
3. facts
4. habits and hobbies
5. things that are generally true
6. work

1. Mr Smith goes to school by bike every day.
2. On Monday we have a math lesson.
3. The Prime Minister lives in Downing Street No. 10.
4. Mr Johnson smokes. It's a bad habit.
Timothy plays tennis and he collects stamps. These are his hobbies.
5. The earth moves round the sun. The sun moves within the galaxy.
6. Mr Porter works at a bank.

Simple Present Passive

The book is written.   Das Buch wird geschrieben.
The children are taught.   Die Kinder werden unterrichtet.
I am beaten by the champion.  Ich werde vom Champion geschlagen.
to be Form + Past Participle (Third Form)

If-Clause Type One
If it rains we will stay inside.
If it doesn't rain we won't stay inside.

If mankind ________ (discover) another habitable planet some people might settle there.

If-clauses Type I with the passive

If another habitable planet is discovered people might settle there.
If the car _________ (wash) it will look great.
If that present _______ (give) to little Timmy he will be very happy.
If the letter ______ (send) today it will arrive tomorrow.
If the cat ______ (feed) too much it might get fat.
If the book ________ (read) by all the students the English teacher will be pleased.
