Simple Past Active and Passive, if-clauses Type Two Combined Exercise

This Unit deals with the Simple Past, the Simple Past Passive and the if-clauses Type II.
Simple Past Active

Jonathan played tennis.
The boys played squash.
Jonathan didn't play chess.
The boys didn't play badminton.
Did Jonathan play volleyball?
Did the boys play cards?

the verb "to be" in the Simple Past

The simple past refers to:

1. something that happened at a specific point in the past
2. something that used to happen regularly or on schedule in the past
3. signal words: last week, last year, in 1992, then, back then, in the past, x years ago


Last year Mr Porter spent his holiday in an English village. He went to the pub every day and played darts with the local people.


Simple Past Passive

The book was written.   Das Buch wurde geschrieben.
The children were taught.   Die Kinder wurden unterrichtet.
I was beaten by the outsider.  Ich wurde vom Außenseiter geschlagen.
to be Form + Past Participle (Third Form)

If-Clause Type Two

If it rained we would stay inside. (The weather is fine, there is no indication of rain!)
If it didn't rain we wouldn't stay inside. (The weather is really bad and there is almost no hope it might cease raining.)

B. Simple Past Passive

Example:
That house was built in 1995.

5. The mouse ___________ (catch) by the big tomcat.

C. If-clauses Type II

If you ________ (travel) to Rome you would like it. Yet you can't afford it.
If they ________ (move) to London they would be happy. They can't. Got jobs here at Brussels.
If mankind ever  ________ (discover) another habitable planet some people would settle there.

D. If-clauses II with the passive

Examples:
If other habitable planets were discovered people would settle there.
If the pool was cleaned we could swim in it.

If the car _________ (wash) it would look great.
If that present _______ (give) to little Timmy he would be very confused.
If the letter ______ (send) today it would arrive tomorrow. However, I haven't finished it yet.
If the cat ______ (feed) too much it would get fat. I would never feed it too much.
If the book ________ (read) by all the students the English teacher would be pleased. However, they're way too lazy.
